E’ dal 1655 che a Salice Salentino, l’Antica Azienda Vitivinicola dei Conti Leone de Castris produce vino ma sono i primi anni del novecento che vedono un sostanziale mutamento dell’azienda in un moderno stabilimento enologico che lancia sul mercato eccellenti bottiglie di vino. Nel 1940 nasce “Cinque Rose”, nome proveniente dal fatto che per tante generazioni i Leone de Castris avevano avuto cinque figli, il primo vino rosato a essere imbottigliato e commercializzato in Italia. La fama per questo vino arriva però nel 1943 , quando il generale americano Charles Poletti, commissario per gli approvvigionamenti delle forze alleate, ordinò 35.000 bottiglie di vino rosato che avesse un nome americano.

It is exactly here, on the very spot where today’s cellar stands, that in 1665 Duke Oronzo, Earl of Lemos, gave birth to the company. He got enchanted by this landscape and decided to sell all his properties in Spain in order to draw the best from Salentine rich terroir. An extremely important year, 1943, marks the birth of Five Roses and the improvement of the bottling line that has seen our rose being the first ever bottled in Italy and sold first of all in USA.
